Fatih: the historic heart of Istanbul
A first-time visitor's guide to the Historic Peninsula, where Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul meet.

Fatih is more than a district. It is the part of Istanbul where centuries of political power, faith, trade and everyday city life are layered almost street by street.
Start with the Historic Peninsula
For a first visit, use Sultanahmet as your anchor. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapı Palace are close enough to connect on foot.
Leave time between landmarks. The small streets, fountains, courtyards and viewpoints are part of the experience, not just the walk between famous sights.
Beyond the postcard landmarks
Fatih also includes Süleymaniye, Fener, Balat, Samatya and Yedikule. Each has a different rhythm, so it works best to explore one small area at a time rather than trying to cross the whole district in a day.
A practical way to visit
Begin early, especially around Sultanahmet. Build your day around nearby stops, use the tram for longer jumps and keep a flexible meal break in Eminönü or Sirkeci.
