Grand Bazaar: Istanbul's trading heart
How covered streets, workshops and historic hans created one of the world's most enduring market districts.
The Grand Bazaar is not a single planned mall. It grew over centuries from core market buildings into a dense network of shops, workshops, lanes and inns.
A market built over time
The bazaar expanded around protected trading buildings and the businesses that clustered near them. Jewellery, carpets, leatherwork and other crafts developed their own corners of the market.
How to enjoy it
Go with curiosity rather than a strict shopping mission. Wander a little beyond the main entrances, compare prices calmly and take a break in the streets around Nuruosmaniye or Beyazıt.
