Why the Basilica Cistern was built
The story behind Istanbul's atmospheric underground reservoir and its forest of reused columns.

The Basilica Cistern feels theatrical today, but it began as a practical answer to an essential question: how could a vast capital keep its water supply secure?
Water for a capital
Fresh water had to travel from distant sources into Constantinople. Aqueducts carried it in, while large cisterns stored it for dry periods and emergencies.
Columns with earlier lives
Many columns appear to have been reused from older buildings. The famous Medusa heads are the best-known examples and a reminder that Istanbul has always been built from many eras at once.
